In the WPIAL Class AAA boys golf semifinals Oct. 11, Gregor Meyer shot 76 and Alex Lawson had a 77 as Fox Chapel finished first in the eight-team field with a total of 396. Central Catholic finished second with a score of 410 at River Forest Country Club.
The Foxes advanced to the championships at Cedarbrook on Oct. 13 and saw their season come to a close as they fell by a single stroke to Central Catholic, 378-379. Peters Township was third at 380. Lawson shot a 72 for the Foxes.
“We knew it was going to be very competitive,” FC senior Anthony Cordaro said. “We had some very tight matches with Central Catholic, and Peters Township was also a very good team.
Meyer added: “It’s tough to lose by one point in a championship. I knew it was going to be a close one. We just came up short.”
Field hockey
Fox Chapel field hockey edged North Allegheny, 3-1, on Oct. 10. Abby Pitcairn scored all three goals for FC, and Meg McCrady added a pair of assists. The FC defense, led by Isabella Iagazzi, Rebecca Klaas, Grace Knepshield and Sarah Fownes, did not allow a shot on goal.
The Foxes blanked Allderdice, 10-0, on Oct. 11. Megan Botos scored three goals, Katie McIlroy scored twice and Abby Pitcairn, Meg McCrady, Paige Ryan, Brianna Lucas and Meg Matthis all scored. Grace Knepshield and Mia Jamiolkowski both notched a pair of assists and Ryan had one. For the second consecutive game, the FC defense did not allow a shot on goal.
Coach Jen McCrady’s team then blanked Woodland Hills, 5-0, on Oct. 13, again not allowing a shot on goal. Jamiolkowski, McIlroy, Pitcairn, Ryan and Knepshield scored goals.
Girls tennis
The WPIAL Class AAA girls tennis section singles tournaments were held Oct. 11, and Fox Chapel’s Amanda Nord claimed the crown with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Baldwin’s Bethany Yauch. In the consolation match, SSA’s Devin Gramley posted a win over FC’s Charlotte James.
Nord lost in the WPIAL quarterfinals, and Gramley lost in the first round at WPIALs.
Girls volleyball
The Fox Chapel girls volleyball team dropped a pair of matches last week. On Oct. 11, the Foxes fell to visiting Armstrong, 3-0. Desirae Buccigrossi had 20 digs and Katie Kenney had four blocks. The Foxes played at Oakland Catholic on Oct. 13 and again lost 3-0. Desirae Buccigrossi had seven digs, Megan Friday added five kills and Dominique Buccigrossi had 11 assists.
Boys soccer
Fox Chapel boys soccer lost to Franklin Regional, 2-1, in a nonsection game Oct. 10. Michael Snowball scored the Foxes’ lone goal. The FC streak of four straight wins came to an end as the Panthers became the first team to score on the Foxes in four games.
It was senior night on Oct. 13 and seniors Vince Lundy, Snowball and Nathan Wecht were honored before the game. The Foxes prevailed over Central Catholic, 1-0, as goalie Jakob Dunn was outstanding in goal. Will Tabor scored for the Foxes as FC secured a playoff berth. They wrapped up their section schedule Saturday with a 6-1 win over Woodland Hills.
Girls soccer
In Section 3-AAAA action Oct. 10, Fox Chapel girls soccer breezed to a 10-0 win over Woodland Hills to improve to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in the section. Bryanna Urso led the Foxes with three goals, and Dixon Veltri scored twice. Julie Scheffler posted the shutout in goal.
