John Bowser made just one mistake Monday.
His pitching counterpart, Pat Monteverde, didn’t commit any — and that made all the difference.
In a duel between two of the top pitchers in Section 3-AAAA, a run-scoring wild pitch in the top of the second inning lifted Monteverde and Fox Chapel to a 1-0 victory over Bowser and host Kiski Area.
“Hats off to Monteverde and John Bowser: Those guys showed that they’re the ace of both of our staffs today,” Kiski Area coach Joe Culler said. “They both executed their game plan, and it just happened that Fox Chapel came out on top.”
Monteverde, a Virginia Wesleyan recruit, tied a career high with 11 strikeouts, limiting Kiski Area (7-3, 2-3) to five hits and striking out the side twice. The left-hander didn’t walk a batter.
