The Fox Chapel indoor track team didn’t send any athletes to the state indoor track championships this season, but Foxes coach Tom Moul was pleased with the dedication of his roster.

Michael Costello came to the Tri-State Track Coaches Association meet at Edinboro following a 3 1/2 hour drive following another event he had scheduled. Costello helped the distance medley relay finish in fifth place with a time of 11 minutes, 13.89 seconds.

Nicky Clump, Harrison Parker and Victor White competed on the relay team.

“Certainly, for the distance runners, it’s nice to get the training and be able to compete while you are in the buildup phase,” Moul said. “That’s where we’ve been since December. For the sprinters and throwers, it was good to get the juices flowing and ready for the bigger outdoor meets.”

Ethan Vaughan, who won the WPIAL Class 3A championship in cross country, missed out on going to states despite running a good time. He placed second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:51.16. David Black also ran in that event and placed 11th with a time of 9:13.35.

“I had a guy several years ago who medaled at states that ran a time six seconds slower than that to get into states,” Moul said. “He got in at 8:57 or 8:59. Most years, the time Ethan ran would have gotten him in, but there were a lot of good runners out east.”

On the girls side, Fox Chapel’s 3,200 relay team reached the medal stand. The Foxes were without a few key contributors on the girls side. Alyssa Quackenbush and Anna Kintner were both out with injuries.

Moul said the indoor season helped set the Foxes up for a strong spring. Fox Chapel will return three of the four members from a strong 400 relay team on the girls side.

Junior Claire Conte has qualified for states during her first two seasons with the Foxes. Moul would like to see her hit the medal stand in Shippensburg this season. After a strong cross country season, Vaughan should also be in the mix to head to states in the distance events.

“I’m anxious to see Claire compete this spring,” Moul said. “She’s gone to states the last couple years, but a medal has eluded her. She’s focused and excited to get a state medal.”
