Davey Fuhrer has his eyes fixed on the future. The Fox Chapel senior golfer visited George Mason and has been in touch with the men’s golf coaches at Miami (Ohio) and High Point.
But Fuhrer has some unfinished business he would like to clean up during his senior season. Fox Chapel has won back-to-back section titles, raising the boys golf team’s count to 31 in program history. The Foxes — and Fuhrer — have ambitions of trying to accumulate as much hardware as they can.
“If I could, I’d like to win the WPIAL team and individual,” Fuhrer said. “Accomplishing both isn’t likely, but it’s doable. I haven’t had the success I would have liked at WPIALs. That upsets me. I want to prove to myself I can do it.”
Fox Chapel last won the WPIAL Class 3A team title in 2021. The Foxes were also PIAA runner-up as a team that season. Last year, Fuhrer finished in 17th place, shooting 161 (80-81) during the individual WPIAL tournament. The first round was played at Champion Lake and the second round was played at Allegheny Country Club.
The Foxes are off to a 5-2 start this season in dual matches. Fox Chapel recently beat Indiana, 191-204, but coach Joe Farrell thought the Sept. 6 win over Shaler was a big turning point for the team.
“We had played a tough quad match where we went up against Peters Township and Shaler where we lost to both teams,” Farrell said. “When we beat Shaler during section play, it was a win that put us in contention to win the section.”
Junior Davis Kittsley thought playing the Titans twice in a short amount of time was an excellent opportunity.
“I feel like we are coming together pretty good,” Kittsley said. “When we first played Shaler and Peters together, we had a bad day. Everyone didn’t play that well. We saw all their weaknesses and said we can get better and improve.”
Fox Chapel has a strong lineup led by Fuhrer, Carson Kittsley and Davis Kittsley. The Foxes can also count on David DiGregory, Joe Rattner, Matt Begg and Anderson Dockey.
Davis Kittsley has a nine-hole average of 38. He said that he has made a two-stroke improvement over last season.
“I feel like my game around the green has improved,” Davis said. “I am able to chip up to the green and make a lot more up and downs. I’m hitting a better ball off the tee to put the ball in more scorable positions than I used to.”
Fuhrer entered his senior season after a busy summer on the junior circuit. He played in tournaments in Michigan and also had a chance to play at the Penn State Blue course. Fuhrer hopes that will help him achieve some of his top goals.
“I’ve played my whole life,” Fuhrer said. “If you hit a bad shot or have a bad hole, you have to think about the next shot. You can’t go back.”
