Southwestern Pennsylvania has been a hotbed for high school wrestling since the WPIAL held its first tournament in 1936. The Sports Town website will honor the WPIAL’s best wrestlers of all-time during the 2016-17 season. Wrestling Historian Ken “Stats” Wunderley, with the help of former Mt. Lebanon coach Bill Lewis, will pick an All-Time Team for 72 high schools from the WPIAL.
The All-Time Teams will feature the best wrestlers from those schools. We will feature 6-7 high schools each Wednesday on Sports Town for 11 weeks during the season. The All-Time lists reflect high school accomplishments only. College and international accomplishments were not considered.
The featured schools for Week 9 are: Avonworth, Fox Chapel, Hopewell, Latrobe, Pine-Richland, Southmoreland, and Trinity.
Leo Wisniewski is an easy choice for MVP. He won two WPIAL Class 3A titles and was a PIAA finalist twice, winning as a senior and placing second as a junior. Below is Fox Chapel’s top 15 wrestlers in alphabetical order.
