If you happened by Hartwood Acres on Friday, you probably saw a slew of young runners. Dorseyville Middle School hosted a middle school cross country meet, and the number of runners was eye-opening.
“We had 1,050 runners competing,” Dorseyville cross country coach Pete Shiner said. “There were 41 teams entered from all over the region with Somerset traveling the farthest.
“The weather was sunny and a little on the warm side, but it was a good day to run.”
North Allegheny finished first followed by Norwin, Upper St. Clair and Fox Chapel.
“We ended up with 10 medals,” Shiner said. “What really makes our race unique is that we run separate races for seventh and eighth grade, which gives the seventh-grade runners a chance to shine. At the middle school level, races are normally combined seventh/eighth grade.”
The highest placed Dorseyville runner was eighth-grader Nico Castracani, who took third place out of 280 runners in the boys eighth-grade race. In the boys seventh-grade race, Will Burger took ninth place. In the girls eighth-grade race, Emily Fera took seventh. In the seventh-grade girls race, Riley McIntyre was the highest placed local runner in 19th place.
