The Fox Chapel boys soccer team had a busy week. The Foxes hosted undefeated Penn-Trafford on Sept. 20 and fell 4-1.
They then took to the road Sept. 22 to face Central Catholic. FC’s Michael Snowball scored the game’s first goal with an assist from Will Tabor. Goalie Jakob Dunn was strong in goal as he kept the Vikings off the board until there were 10 minutes left in the half. The teams were tied at the break.
The Foxes had a chance to take the lead, but the Central Catholic goalie made a sparkling save on a Nathan Wecht shot. The Vikings scored nine minutes into the half and again with 14 minutes left and held on for a 3-1 win.
The Foxes (3-5, 3-3 Section 3-AAAA) got back in the win column Saturday with a 5-0 victory at Penn Hills. Wecht scored on a header with an assist from Zane Ingram. Will Carnivale scored 20 seconds into the second half with the assist going to Alex Marotte. Three minutes later, Snowball scored with an assist going to Marotte. Snowball returned the favor seven minutes later with a lead pass to Marotte, who made it 4-0. Jacob Miller scored the game’s final goal with an assist from Wecht. Dunn picked up the shutout.
Girls soccer
The Fox Chapel girls soccer team played against Brashear and Woodland Hills last week and cruised to 12-0 wins in both games to remain unbeaten at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in Section 3-AAAA.
The Foxes hosted Brashear on Sept. 19 and rolled to a 10-0 halftime lead. Dixon Veltri notched her first hat trick of the season. Deena DeBaldo, Sarah Sinnott and Claudia Demartino each scored twice, while Blair Echnat, Paige Asbury and Gabby Guerrieri also scored. It was the first varsity goal for Echnat, Asbury and Guerrieri. Kate Feczko and Julie Scheffler combiner for the shutout. DeBaldo had five assists and Echnat had one.
Woodland Hills came to town Sept. 21 and, like Brashear, was on the short end of a 10-0 halftime deficit. Veltri had another hat trick while DeBaldo scored twice. Sinnott, Katie Livingston, Echnat, Greta Lazzara, Lexie Schulman and Demartino all scored.
Assists were recorded by DeBaldo and Veltri, with two each, and Lazzara, Sinnott, Liz Heidenreich, Julie Mallinger and Echnat also picked up assists. Feczko and Scheffler combined for the shutout.
Cross country
The Fox Chapel cross country team participated in the PIAA Foundation Invitational in Hershey on Saturday. The meet featured many of the top teams from around the state. The Foxes ended up with three medalists.
For the boys, Adam Cook finished sixth and, on the girls side, Sarena Seeger was ninth and Annika Urban finished 15th.
“I thought that was a pretty good accomplishment,” FC coach Tom Moul said. “Along with our medalists, freshman Christian Fitch finished 30th, which was the top time by a freshman.”
Boys golf
Fox Chapel had six golfers advance to the WPIAL Class AAA individual semifinals Sept. 19 at the Section 4 qualifier at Willowbrook Country Club. Gregor Meyer finished second with a 67, Alex Lawson was third with a 70, Anthony Cordaro came in fourth with a 73, Grant Thiele posted a 78 to finish ninth, while Andrew Friend and Trey Kelley also posted scores of 78 to finish 10th and 11th.
Girls golf
Four Fox Chapel girls golfers advanced to the WPIAL championships after strong showings at the section qualifier Sept. 21. Hannah Conroy finished fourth with a 78, Kerstin Nestel was seventh after shooting an 86, Cara Levicoff was right behind in eighth place after her 87 and Ursula Meyer was 11th at 88.
“It was a good day for the girls,” FC coach John Broderick said. “I’m not sure if we’ve ever advanced four before, and I’m proud of all of them.”
Tennis
The Fox Chapel girls tennis team defeated Thomas Jefferson, 4-1, Sept. 19. Amanda Nord, Kristen Friday and Molly Weise won in singles while Tanvi Merengti and Sophia Lee earned a doubles win for the Foxes. On Sept. 21, Fox Chapel beat Shady Side Academy, 4-1, to clinch the section title. Nord beat Devin Gramley, 6-1, 6-2; Charlotte James swept Erin Gramley, 6-2, 6-0; and Friday beat Isha Reddy, 6-3, 6-1. In doubles, Wiese and Margeaux Essey beat SSA’s Aya Youssef, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, and the Indians picked up a win at No. 2 doubles as Keegan Yaccino and Kirsten Kann won over Moira McCormick and Morgann Green, 6-0, 6-1.
The Foxes (11-3) lost to Mt. Lebanon on Sept. 22 by a 3-2 score. Nord and James won in singles.
Field hockey
Fox Chapel field hockey cruised to a 9-0 win over Woodland Hills on Sept. 21. Paige Ryan scored three goals and recorded an assist. Isabella Lagazzi and Brianna Lucas scored twice. Meg McCrady and Megan Botos each had one goal and an assist, while Abby Baldauf added an assist.
