Deena DeBaldo’s goal in the final minute of regulation lifted Fox Chapel to a dramatic 2-1 victory Saturday at home in a WPIAL Girls AAA first-round soccer playoff match against Penn-Trafford.
As the teams battled into the late stages in a steady rain at Fox Chapel deadlocked 1-1, the prospects of the game going to extra time appeared inevitable.
Perseverance paid off for DeBaldo, who had nine shots on goal, as she received a pass from Maggie Coulson, then lined up a shot from 15 yards that found the back of the net entering the 80th minute.
“It seemed like she was rushed a little bit in some of her shots today,” Fox Chapel coach Peter Torres said. “But when she finally had that opportunity at the end, she put it where she needed to.”
