At least a trio of Fox Chapel golfers will have a chance to compete for a WPIAL individual championship.
Junior Gregor Meyer, sophomore Scott Bitar and sophomore Amani Dambrosio all qualified for the WPIAL Class AAA boys championship after placing in the top 18 at the individual semifinals Tuesday at the Links at Spring Church.
Meyer shot a 75 to finish in eighth place, six shots behind Central Catholic’s Neal Shipley. Bitar tied for 10th with a 76, while Dambrosio finished 15th with a 77.
Fox Chapel junior Grant Thiele is the alternate after shooting a 79.
The WPIAL Class AAA finals are Oct. 3 at Nemacolin Country Club.
Cross-Country
The Fox Chapel boys and girls cross country teams each captured the team title at the sixth annual Division I, Section 4 championship meet Wednesday at Northmoreland Park in Apollo.
“I felt proud of both teams in how they ran and adapted to the (warm) conditions,” Fox Chapel coach Tom Moul said. “Both teams are filled with tough kids.”
The Fox Chapel boys topped second-place Central Catholic. Kiski Area took third, Plum fourth and Highlands eighth. The Foxes earned five of the top eight spots, including individual champion Christian Fitch who recorded a winning time of 16 minutes, 37 seconds.
Also finishing in the top 10 for Fox Chapel were Jonathan Folkerts in third, Ian Brown in fifth, Ryan Petrunia in sixth and Greg Overbeck in eighth. Nick Gabrielli led Kiski with a seventh overall finish (17:52), and teammate Angelo Pisani rounded out the top 10.
The Fox Chapel girls ran away with their team title, taking the top five spots. Oakland Catholic placed second, followed by Kiski Area and Plum. Highlands finished seventh.
Caelan Miller won the girls individual title in 20:02, and teammates Annika Urban, Sarena Seeger, Brooke Krally and Grace Sisson round out the top five. Kiski’s Kierra Shreffler (sixth) and Plum’s Angela Valotta (ninth) also placed in the top 10.
Girls tennis
Fox Chapel 5, Mars 0 — Amanda Nord, Charlotte James and Kristen Friday all picked up wins in singles play for the Foxes (17-1) as they won in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs.
Girls volleyball
Plum 3, Fox Chapel 0 — Brianna Bialota led the way with 10 kills as the Mustangs (5-3, 4-2) won a Section 4-AAAA match.
Field hockey
Fox Chapel 5, Peters Township 0 — Sloan Rost had a pair of goals as Fox Chapel (7-1) picked up a Section 2-AAA victory. Ellie Markel, Lily Zaltman and Brooke Ryan also scored for the Foxes.
Girls soccer
Fox Chapel 3, Canon-McMillan 3 — Blair Echnat scored twice for the Foxes (7-3-1) in a nonsection draw with Class 4A No. 3 Canon-McMillan. Greta Lazzara added a goal and an assist for Fox Chapel. Annabel Thomas scored twice for Canon-McMillan (6-1-2), which also got a goal from Addie Roman.
