Stu Lyon was the star player on the 1977 Fox Chapel basketball team that won WPIAL and state championships.
It was the greatest team in the history of Fox Chapel, and the 6-foot-3 Lyon received a scholarship to Oregon, then coached by Dick Harter. Lyon left for greener pastures after deciding that Oregon wasn’t the right fit and transferred to Georgia Tech where his playing time and scoring average increased.
Now, 37 years later, Lyon has returned to the scene of his biggest triumphs. He’s coaching the Fox Chapel boys JV team and also assisting coach Zach Skrinjar with the varsity.
“I returned to the area in April and I went to see the team play in a summer league,” Lyon said. “Zach told me to come out to a couple of the practices. Then, his assistant Joe Farrell got the Riverview job and that created an opening. I’m glad to be back.”
