Three members and a former member of the Fox Chapel Crew have been honored nationally for their academic and athletic achievements.
Seniors Sarah Hamilton, William “Tim” Marsh, Alan McIvor and Elizabeth “Liz” Woodwell were among 36 boys and girls named to the 2016-17 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll announced last month.
Another 36 people made honorable mention.
In existence since 1992, the program this year received 120 nominations from athletes representing 64 clubs and school programs from across the country.
Applicants must be USRowing members who have rowed or coxed at least one year, and successfully competed at or above the league or regional level.
The USRowing website said this year’s group of applicants was especially strong, with very high GPAs and test scores.
Central Catholic’s Joseph Connolly also made the honor roll.
Marsh, 17, of Fox Chapel said he had a perfect score on a college assessment test. He plans to study business at Penn or another Ivy League school, or Virginia.
A Midwest Scholastic champion in a men’s lightweight double scull, he qualified for the Scholastic Rowing Association of America Regatta last spring.
Marsh said the award is “exciting” because it encompasses high standards for academics and athletics.
Hamilton, 17, of O’Hara liked being honored for the “total package, not just one accomplishment.”
She plans to major in engineering at Pitt, Case Western or Tufts.
She and Woodwell were in a women’s varsity quad that placed third at the Midwest Scholastic championship last season.
Now a member of the Three Rivers Junior Rowing team on Washington’s Landing, Woodwell, 17, of Indiana Township, said she likes the honor because it acknowledges “all of the hard work I put in over the years.”
She is weighing the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern and Bucknell for engineering.
McIvor, 17, of Fox Chapel said it was a “huge honor” to be selected.
He will study engineering, and is considering Georgia Tech, Southern California, UC Berkeley and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
He was on a winning men’s varsity quad at the Midwest Scholastic championship and competed at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America Regatta last season.
Fox Chapel Crew coach Mark Bellinger believes two to five team members apply every year, and several usually make the honor roll.
Woodwell plans to row in college, and McIvor also will do so, depending on his school choice.
