When a balk moved the tying run over to third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Peters Township pitcher Eric Riotto admitted he grew nervous.
A teammate jogged over for some encouragement.
“(Shortstop Alex Mundy) came over and saw me and some lady screamed something, and we just started laughing about that,” Riotto said. “And then we just said, ‘All right, whatever. We’ll see what happens here.’ ”
Nerves calmed, Riotto bared down against Fox Chapel catcher and No. 3 hitter Zachary Burkhart, who had reached via single, intentional walk and walk in his first three at-bats. Riotto then got his second of two strikeouts to close out Peters Township’s 1-0 win over Fox Chapel in a WPIAL Class AAAA first-round game Tuesday at West Mifflin.
