On Friday, January 20, at the Allegheny County Wrestling Championship, Foxes’wrestler Mike Mahon earned his 100th career victory in unforgettable fashion when he pinned Avonworth’s Ryan Hunt in a mere 17 seconds.
Since his second-place win at the wrestling championship, Mike’s career record has now climbed to 106-45. Throughout most of the season, the senior also has been ranked third in the WPIAL in his weight category.
A four-year starter for the Foxes, Mike comes by his talent naturally. He is the fourth out of five Mahon brothers, all four-year letter winners, to wrestle for Fox Chapel Area High School.
Mike, now a senior, started his varsity career as a freshman in the 170-pound weight class and qualified for the WPIAL championship in his very first year with the team. He moved up to 182 pounds in his sophomore year, where he has remained for the past three years. Mike has qualified for WPIALs all four years and last year advanced to the state championship.
“Mike is quick, aggressive, and strong,” says his coach, Ron Frank, who is close to a milestone of his own at three wins away from his 400th career victory. “He’s been a great captain who leads by example and has good leadership skills.”
Mike hopes to carry forward those talents next year at the collegiate level. Cleveland State, Waynesburg, and West Liberty universities and Thiel College are currently recruiting him.
