The Fox Chapel Area High School girls’ tennis team won their first round of the 2016 PIAA team tournament handily by beating Erie’s McDowell High School, 5-0.
The team was 15-4 this season and section champions for the 21st time in school history.
Junior Amanda Nord and freshman Charlotte James, the current WPIAL doubles title holders, both had straight set wins for Fox Chapel, as did sophomore Kristen Friday. Moira McCormick, a senior, and junior Molly Wiese also had straight set wins, along with Tanvi Meringenti and junior Morgann Green in doubles play.
“I am really proud of the girls, “says Coach Alex Slezak. “The match yesterday was well played by everyone on the team. We were mentally prepared to engage in a real battle because the teams from the WPIAL are known for being very strong, and that worked to our advantage.”
Next the team travels to Hersey, PA on Friday, Oct. 28 for a match up with Manheim Township High School.
