Laurel Shymansky and Amanda Nord had a bit of an axe to grind with North Allegheny’s Tina Li. It was nothing personal. It was just that a year ago, Li and her partner Eugenia Lee defeated them in the PIAA Class AAA doubles championship.
Shymansky and Nord got a second chance at Li, albeit with a new partner in Ashley Huang, in the WPIAL Class AAA final Wednesday at North Allegheny. And although it wasn’t exactly the revenge they wanted, the result for the Fox Chapel duo was just as sweet. With a 6-0, 6-1 victory, they became the first tandem to defend a WPIAL Class AAA doubles title since Jen Larimore and Kelly Whalen of North Allegheny won consecutive titles in 2007-08.
“It’s awesome and the fact that we did it her senior year really meant a lot,” Nord, a sophomore, said of Shymansky. “I’m very proud and not many people can say [they won as a freshman and sophomore], so I’m just happy that we could pull through and do it.”
For Shymansky, she became the first since Larimore to win three WPIAL Class AAA doubles titles.
