Big upset for girls’ soccer

The Lady Foxes upset Upper St. Clair 2-0, in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAAA soccer playoffs. Senior Sam Dockey and sophomore Kaylee Uribe scored for the Foxes.

Senior Claudia DeMartino and junior Lucy Ream had assists, and junior Sammi Dunlap and freshman Molly McNaughton shared duties in the net to combine for the shutout.

The Foxes entered the playoffs with a 10-7-1 record, and the Panthers were 11-6.

“The girls played well in all aspects of the game,” says Coach Peter Torres. “After scoring in the first half, however, we lost control of the game for a while in the second half, but ended up scoring another goal, and that gave us a cushion. We had a strong defensive effort to keep Upper St. Clair scoreless, as well as a dominating performance by our midfielders. Our forwards were able to generate attacks and shots, which has been a goal of ours all season.”

Next, Fox Chapel Area will play the top-ranked seed, Norwin (16-1-0), in Thursday’s quarterfinals. The time and location are still to be determined.

“We will be facing the number one seed and know it will be our biggest challenge of the season,” adds the coach.
