The Fox Chapel Area High School Girls’ Golf Team finished as the runner-up at the WPIAL team championship and now will advance to the PIAA finals for the first time since 2010.The championship will be held October 25, at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York, Pennsylvania.
The girls defeated seven of the nine playoff teams participating in the event using a balanced scoring attack led by senior co-captains Hannah Conroy and Cara Levicoff. They finished with an 81 and 88, respectively.
Especially strong performances were turned in by juniors Jessica Paper, who finished with a 93, and Nicole Garcia-Tunon, who shot a 95. Collectively the two players improved by 10 strokes during their back nines when the pressure to perform was the greatest.
Sophomore Emily Scheffler rounded out the scoring with a solid 106, which was one of the best scores turned in by a player in the number 5 position.
According to girls’ golf coach John Broderick, after learning about the members of the boys’ team who were involved in a single-car accident, the girls’ team made a commitment to do their very best to represent not only their school but also the Fox Chapel Area.
“When the girls heard about the boys at Wednesday’s practice, they decided to play in their honor… mission accomplished,” he said.
