Fighting a much tougher battle than they originally had expected, the Foxes boys’ tennis team defeated Taylor Allderdice High School, 3-2, to earn their third consecutive WPIAL Class AAA Section 3 championship title.
The victory also represents a three-peat undefeated season in section play. Overall, the Foxes are 9-0 this season.
Top Foxes’ singles player Robby Shymansky, who is undefeated again this season, overpowered Marcus Mitchell, 6-1, 6-1, while Jared Nord fell to David Missry, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Jay Kashyap played in the number three singles slot for the day. Allderdice’s Kazuma Parkinson defeated him 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Both Fox Chapel Area doubles teams won their matches. Kurran Singh and Karsten Lagerquist defeated Sammy Nayhouse and Scott Sobol, 6-2, 6-0, while Brandon Wei and Michael Kilmer came from behind to beat Leo Sweeney and Benji Gluzman 5-7, 7-6, 6-1.
“I’m proud of all of the guys for coming through,” says Foxes’ head coach Alex Slezak. “It feels good to win another section championship and build confidence. Allderdice is a really good team, and after this match we respect them even more for how well the competed.”
The team has one more non-section game planned before the end of the regular season and the playoffs will begin at the end of the week.
