Friday night’s Fox Chapel at Penn Hills boys basketball game had no barring on the section standings, but it had the excitement level of two teams battling for first place.
With 20.7 seconds left in double overtime and his team down by two points, Kyree Hairston-Mitchell dialed up from way beyond the 3-point line to give his team a 60-59 win.
It was a slow start for the Indians, who fell behind 10-5 after the first quarter. The home team picked up the pace in the second and went into the half trailing 27-24.
The adjustments Penn Hills made after the break worked as they grabbed a 43-37 lead heading into the final quarter of regulation.
Fox Chapel did a great job reversing the momentum to and force overtime.
In a shocking twist, both team’s went scoreless in the first overtime to set up Hairston-Mitchell’s heroics.
Leading the scoring sheet for Penn Hills was Marshall McArthur with 17 points. Tyree Spencer finished with 13 points.
For Fox Chapel, Arnold Vento had a game-high 26 points. Sam Brown and Ryan Kerr added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
With the win, Penn Hills improves to 12-2 on the season and record its sixth straight win. The Indians will compete in the MLK Weekend Showcase at Woodland Hills on Sunday against Chester High School from Philadelphia.
The loss drops Fox Chapel to 9-5 on the season and snapped its five game win streak. The Foxes will return to action on Tuesday when they host Latrobe in a battle for first place in the section at 7:30 p.m.
