Name: Carson Cohen
School: Fox Chapel
Grade: 11
Sport: Boys Basketball
Position: Point guard
Background: Cohen is arguably the best player for one of the best teams in WPIAL Class 6A. After playing more of a supporting role last season, Cohen has stepped into the starting point guard position and has thrived. A team captain, Cohen does a lot of everything for Fox Chapel, which is off to one of the best starts in school history. Cohen, a 6-foot-1 junior, averages a team-best 16 points per game. He also leads the team in assists and is second in rebounds. Fox Chapel is 14-1 overall and 7-1 in Section 3. The Foxes play at Woodland Hills tonight and then host first-place Penn Hills on Friday. Penn Hills defeated the Foxes, 62-59, earlier this month. The Foxes are trying to win their first section title in 10 years.
Coach Zach Skrinjar said: “As a point guard, it’s a natural position of leadership. He’s a captain as a junior. In my eight years at Fox Chapel, I had never had a junior captain. That speaks a lot about him. He kind of just plays. That’s what I have always liked about him. He doesn’t say a whole lot to the other players or the referees. He’s a quiet kid. He just goes out and plays. I’ve always kind of liked that about him, his ability to just play. That’s kind of one of the mantras that we have here. I think he’s a tough matchup. With his skill set, he can do a lot of unique things. He’s a very good ball handler. He’s a good passer. He can take the ball to the basket. He has a good mid-range game and he’s good from three-point range. He defends and he rebounds. He does a little bit of everything very well. I think he’s a tough matchup because he can do everything above average.”
