Ken Wunderley profiles Fox Chapel wrestler Mike Mahon. Read his story below.
After watching three brothers compete on the Fox Chapel High School wrestling team, it’s no surprise that Mike Mahon is following in the footsteps of his brothers.
“Mike is the fourth of five brothers,” Fox Chapel coach Ron Frank said. “My coaches and I have a saying, ‘Thank goodness for Mrs. Mahon.’ I’ve never had a family with five brothers before.”
Mike Mahon is a 182-pound junior who has a 19-7 record.
“I started wrestling when I was 5 years old after watching my brothers wrestle,” Mahon said. “We’re all very competitive. We’ve had some pretty good battles at home and knocked over a lamp every once in a while.”
Justin Mahon was the first and most successful of the five brothers. He was a four-year starter who graduated in 2009 after compiling a 122-38 record. As a senior, he placed second in the WPIAL Class AAA tournament at 152 pounds and earned a PIAA berth.
“I didn’t get to see Justin wrestle in the state tournament,” Mike Mahon said. “I’ve never been to Hershey before.”
