Entering the final week of the regular season, the Fox Chapel girls basketball team and the Shady Side Academy boys have already secured a playoff berth while the Fox Chapel boys and Shady Side Academy girls need some help to qualify.
Coach Jennifer O’Shea’s Foxes entered the week with a 9-3 record in Section 2-AAAA and 11-6 overall. They are tied with McKeesport for second-place behind Penn Hills (12-0). Gateway (8-4) is in fourth place. The top four advance.
Fox Chapel picked up a big road win Jan. 26 at Plum as it built a 26-18 halftime lead and went on to a 51-40 win in Section 2-AAAA. Taylor Cohen scored 19 points and Kayla Slovenec added 16.
“We’ve had a tough schedule, and we still have two tough road games against Gateway and Armstrong,” O’Shea said. “We’ve played well. We had a pair of tough losses to McKeesport and Penn Hills two weeks ago.
“The Penn Hills game was good for our kids because they now know we can play with them. Our girls never quit. They play hard until the end. One other positive is some of our other players have been stepping up each game.”
Sarah Supsura had 12 points and 10 rebounds against McKeeesport, and Claudia Guererri had 10 points. Kayla Slovenec had 11 against Penn Hills and Taylor Cohen had 14
