While Penn Hills has its sights set on another championship in Section 2-AAAA, there remains a lot of speculation as to which teams will join the Indians when the WPIAL Class AAAA basketball tournament begins next month.
Penn Hills is 10-0 following Friday afternoon’s 57-29 victory over Franklin Regional. Beyond that, however, a tent could be placed over the next four to five teams and the order could change between now and the end of the season.
Fox Chapel is in a second-place tie with McKeesport as both teams have section records of 7-3. Should the two teams remained tied, then head-to-head results would not be a factor as the two teams have now split with each other. Fox Chapel won the initial meeting back in December at Fox Chapel, 45-40, but the Tigers gained the split with a 64-63 decision this past Thursday.
Gateway is fourth at 6-4, and Plum has a break-even record of 5-5. Franklin Regional can’t be counted out as the Panthers are sixth with a record of 3-7.
The first four teams automatically qualify for the postseason tournament. But if there are ties for fourth, then all teams in that scenario advance to a play-in round. A lot can change between now and the end of the season.
