Jeremy Haigh was caught off guard when he received an email from Fox Chapel baseball coach Jim Hastings. The recent Foxes graduate didn’t realize he had been nominated for the Pennsylvania State Baseball Coaches Association All-State team.
Haigh, who was chosen by the organization as first team all-state as a utility player, also was picked to play in the PSBCA’s inaugural all-star game June 22 at Medlar Field in State College.
“I had no idea I was even nominated until I got the email from my coach,” Haigh said. “It was neat. To go there with a few guys from the WPIAL and represent the district was cool. I hope it’s a tradition that will continue.”
Haigh played outfield for Team West, which lost 9-2 to Team East. During his senior season, Haigh hit .424 with a .521 on-base percentage and a .780 slugging percentage. Haigh also hit five home runs and drove in 20 runs.
Haigh, who will play at Wagner next season, was the starting pitcher for Fox Chapel’s playoff game with Latrobe. Haigh threw all seven innings, allowing seven hits and two runs in the Foxes’ 2-1 loss. Haigh drove in Fox Chapel’s only run.
Haigh, who played varsity as a freshman, appreciated all the opportunities he had.
“I feel like high school was an awesome journey,” Haigh said. “My first game pitching, I pitched against Pine-Richland. I had the opportunity to pitch against a good team from the beginning. I appreciate how the players during my first year quickly accepted me, and I earned their trust. That gave me the confidence to have a great sophomore, junior and senior year.”
Haigh said he had never played in an all-star game before. The closest thing he came to that event was when he played for Team Northeast at the Prep Baseball Report Futures game last summer.
He went to Georgia to play on a team that featured players from Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.
Haigh said the PSBCA game gave him a good look at what he will be faced with at the next level.
“I had played at PSU a couple of times before,” Haigh said. “This one was different. Every player there was phenomenal. I think the experience was fantastic, and it was the best overall competition that I’ve ever played against and got to be a part of.”
