Cristina Bermudez, a member of the Foxes’ girls’ tennis team, has been named the Hines Ward Positive Athlete of the Week. She has been selected to appear on WPXI-TV’s Hines Ward Show at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 11. A sophomore, Cristina plays on the varsity team and is known for her determination, work ethic and desire to succeed in all phases of her life. In addition to her extracurricular activities on the court, Cristina has spent nearly every weekend for the last two years volunteering with Lending Hands, a club she and her older sister created to encourage other teenagers to volunteer at a retirement home.
“Cristina is the epitome of a positive athlete,” says her coach, Alex Slezak. “What makes her stand out is that she realizes tennis and life are not just about her; it is actually about serving others. She has discovered at a very young age that one of the greatest lessons sports has to teach is that it is more important what happens in you than what happens to you.”
Cristina is the third member of the Fox Chapel Area High School girls’ tennis team to be named a Positive Athlete in the past three out of four years since former Steeler Hines Ward created the award.
