Athletic Highlights
Eyeing a Return to WPIAL Playoffs
The boys’ basketball coaching staff observed something recently about the way the team was playing that they weren’t happy about it. Their solution was, quite literally, eye opening. “We noticed that we were playing with our heads down too much, missing open people, and not looking at the rim,” says head coach Zach Skrinjar. “Coach...
Four Foxes Medal at County Wrestling Championships
Four Foxes wrestlers stood out among the nearly 400 competitors at the 18th Allegheny County Wrestling Championships held at Fox Chapel Area High School, January 18 and 19. “Once again, we had a field of incredibly talented wrestlers,” says Foxes’ wrestling coach Ron Frank, one of the tournament’s original founders. “There were many hard- fought...
Best of the Best Wrestlers Will Grapple at Foxes’ Annual Tournament
The 18th annual Allegheny County High School Wrestling Championships will be held January 18 and 19, 2019, at Fox Chapel Area High School. As in the past, some of the region’s most elite wrestlers will be showcased at the event, which is expected to draw more than 400 individual student athletes. “All county high schools...
“She’s Not a Girl, She’s a Wrestler”… and That’s a Compliment
Ron Frank is always on the hunt for athletes to join his wrestling team, and their gender doesn’t concern him at all. His philosophy is that good athletes can be trained in the techniques of the sport, as long as they have an outstanding work ethic, a desire to learn, and can withstand the rigors...
Boys’ Swimming Eyes Section Title
It has been two decades since a Foxes’ boys’ swim team won a section title, but Coach Dan Taylor thinks this might be the year. His optimism comes on the heels of his concerted effort to rebuild a program that, five years ago, only had about six male swimmers. The 2018-2019 combined boys’ swim and...
Divers Plunge Into Familiar WPIAL Waters
It didn’t take long for senior divers Jonah Cagley and Magnus Loeffler and sophomore David Manelis to qualify for the WPIAL Class AAA championships coming up in February. In fact, they did it at the very first meet of the regular season. In order to qualify, divers must attain a cumulative 9.7 difficulty on five...
Lady Foxes Capture Tournament Title
Winning the Peter Sauer Memorial Tournament held over the holidays was the perfect and well-earned present for the Foxes’ girls’ basketball team. The Foxes defeated Avonworth in their first game, 53-22, and then scored a come-from-behind win against Shady Side Academy 42-38. Shady Side previously was the top-ranked team in their conference and had a...
Encouraging New Depth to Girls’ Diving
Vernon Yenick has coached the Fox Chapel Area diving teams since 2007, but this is the first time the girls’ team has been this large and filled with so much promise. The members of the 2018-2019 team are senior Kate Eames, sophomores Zoe Boychuk and Maggie Kelly, and freshmen Hanna Essey, Sarah Guiffre, and Claire...
Fenton’s Breakout Year
At 5’3”, Claire Fenton is one of the smaller players on the basketball court, but it would be a mistake to underestimate what this impressive athlete is capable of achieving. This season, Claire has been one of the Foxes’ top point earners. Going into the school district’s holiday break, Claire has scored double digits in...
Multiple Sports a Positive Thing for Wrestlers
The days can be long and the workouts can be grueling, but for 13 members of the Foxes’ wrestling team, their status as multisport athletes has been a very positive experience and one that they highly recommend. It’s also a practice that their coach, Ron Frank, wholeheartedly supports for many reasons. “In a school the...
Kerr Back Stronger After Last Year’s Season-Ending Injury
At this exact same time of the year during the 2017 basketball season, Ryan Kerr was on top of the world. The 6’2” player was slated to be a junior captain, along with then senior Carson Cohen, and he had set high expectations for himself, as did his coaches. It wasn’t unusual for him to...
