Face Covering Guidelines for Winter Sports Participants

January 7, 2021

Dear Families of FCASD Winter Sports Participants,

As we embark upon the winter sports season competitions, I want to take this opportunity to provide you with some information regarding COVID-19 face-covering guidelines and what student-athletes may expect while participating in upcoming practices, competitions, and events.

Based on the updated order of the Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health requiring universal face coverings, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, student-athletes are encouraged to always wear face coverings and to maintain physical distance during team activities, when appropriate. Athletes should practice physical distancing, as much as is possible, while being transported to and from competitions, in locker rooms, and on the benches or sidelines.

However, we want parents and guardians to know that per the CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health, there are exemptions and times when face coverings may not be required to be worn, which includes but is not limited to times of high-intensity activities, workouts, or athletic competitions. Additionally, face coverings should not be worn when they would cause or exacerbate a medical condition, mental health condition, or a disability. Therefore, if a student-athlete needs to remove his/her face covering during competition or a high-intensity workout, he or she is permitted to do so. However, we strongly encourage students to wear their face coverings as much as possible as a means of mitigating the spread of COVID-19 and keeping all of our athletes and coaches safe.

I feel it is important that parents/guardians are aware that throughout the winter season, although all schools are required to follow the updated mask guidance, not all schools we play or visit will have the same interpretation of masking guidelines or requirements as the Fox Chapel Area School District.  Schools are making decisions regarding specific scenarios, competition, and health needs based on their own situations.

Please know that the order to wear face coverings is being done for the safety of our student-athletes and coaches, as well as for opposing players and staff. We will continue to do our very best to keep all of our student-athletes and coaches safe.
