Foxes Knock off No. 1 Penn Hills

from Post-Gazette.com

One moment Penn Hills was trying to run out the clock for a victory. The next, Fox Chapel was celebrating a win against the No. 1-ranked team in the WPIAL.

The Foxes played tight defense and hit clutch free throws down the stretch to pull out a 61-54 triumph at Penn Hills in Class 6A Section 3.

With about 1:30 left, Penn Hills was trying to run out the clock, but Fox Chapel’s defense forced the Indians to put up a shot. The Foxes rebounded, and Carson Cohen was fouled on the other end where he made his first free-throw attempt. His second missed, but Dom McGriff pulled down the offensive rebound, got fouled on a put-back attempt and converted both free throws.

“It was a real gut-check,” Fox Chapel coach Zach Skrinjar said. “We just kept coming back and sealed it at the foul line at the end. Every section win is a big win, especially when its against the top team in the WPIAL.”

The Foxes (13-4, 7-3) have won five games in a row.

McGriff finished with 23 points, followed by Ben Kelly with 19. Daivon Stephens and Cory Fulton had 15 points apiece for the Indians (16-2, 8-2).
