Amanda Nord Receives KDKA-TV Extra Effort Award

Senior tennis player Amanda Nord was awarded the KDKA-TV/Allegheny Health Network Extra Effort Award for her accomplishments in tennis, academics, and the community. The presentation was made during a special pep rally held at the high school and will be aired Thursday, November 9, at 6:45 p.m. during the KDKA-TV News.

A James Madison University recruit, Amanda, along with sophomore partner Charlotte James, are the reigning PIAA doubles champions. They will defend their title November 3 and 4 in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Amanda also won the state doubles’ title when she was a sophomore with then partner Laurel Shymansky, who now plays for Duquesne University. She and Laurel were the PIAA runner-up in Amanda’s freshman year.

It has been a monumental season for Amanda, who just weeks ago also became only the second girls’ player in WPIAL history to win four WPIAL doubles titles. The last time that feat was accomplished was 34 years ago.

Amanda has a doubles career-record of 43-1, with her only loss coming in the PIAA finals in her freshman year. She is 74-14 in singles and ranked fourth among all senior girls’ tennis players in Pennsylvania.

In addition to her excellence on the court, Amanda has a 4.0-weighted quality point average, takes accelerated and AP classes, and is a member of the National Honor Society. She also has contributed in the community by planting trees around the City of Pittsburgh and working with special needs children, and she mentors elementary school students in math.
