Prevost retires tennis coaching post, again

The Fox Chapel boys tennis team recently concluded another successful season with a WPIAL team title. It was the first WPIAL team crown for interim coach Dave Prevost, who returned to coach while Alex Slezak recuperated from surgery.

Prevost greatly enjoyed the year, but he thinks his coaching career is now wrapped up.

“If (athletic director Mike O’Brien) calls upon me a third time, he just may never get rid of me,” Prevost said. “I’m looking forward to being a fan next season.”

He believes the Foxes will be a force next season despite losing a pair of seniors.

“Graduating Neil Bencherif and Jared Cohen will leave some gaps in the team. Neil was a great anchor at third singles. Jared played well in the doubles. Both served as co-captains and were great examples of sportsmanship and effort to the younger players.”

Robby Shymansky and Jared Nord will be two of the leading returnees next season, along with Karsten Lagerquist, Jay Kashyap and Milo Baron.

“They will be a fun team to watch next spring,” Prevost said.

The WPIAL championship will be something Prevost long will remember.

“Repeating as WPIAL champs was an accomplishment for the team, having graduated Sid Rajupet. The boys worked hard from square one in March all the way up to the team finals. Many of the players showed improvement over the season, and the addition of Milo Baron (helped).”

Prevost adheres to the adage “never say never,” but as far as he is concerned he will become a full-time fan.

“I enjoyed myself, but two retirements from coaching are enough.”
